Thomas P. Butler is a recognized expert in strategy and message development, legal, crisis and earned media communications. He has worked on behalf of hundreds of clients involved in matters ranging from complex trials and litigation; Fortune 50 shareowner proxy fights; corporate, business, community, and public affairs campaigns; and the introduction of new products, brands and concepts, all while establishing an extraordinary reputation with the media.
In 2021, Butler Associates the award-winning Strategic Communications and Public Relations agency he founded was ranked by the O’Dwyers PR Report among New York’s Top 5 for its Environmental & Public Affairs practice and Top 15 for its Business, Financial, Economic Development and Professional Services practices.
In 2019, Tom and the firm he leads were winners of the Public Relations Society of America – BIG APPLE AWARD for the “Best of the Best” Strategic Communications Campaign. In 2020 & 2018, the team was awarded PRSA’s Best Law Firm and Legal Marketing Campaign. For nearly 30 years, Tom has been a leading media strategist and adviser to clients as diverse as Inc. Magazine, Cornell University School of Industrial & Labor Relations, Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University, Siebert Williams Shank LLC, Hunts Point Cooperative Meat Market, BTIG LLC, Greater New York Auto Dealers Association, Patriot Bank, NA., Windham Mountain Ski Resort, Hostelworld Group PLC., Mechanical Contractors Association of New York, Securitas USA, New York Fire Pension Fund, and New York State Troopers PBA, among numerous other entities and brands. For over 20 years and in the wake of the 9-11 attacks, Mr. Butler also directed communications for the Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York Local 94 and has also done so for the FDNY EMS Local 2507.
Prior to founding the firm in 1996, Tom served as a Senior Vice President and Vice President respectively at two of New York’s largest independent PR agencies, managing public relations for publicly traded corporations, large real estate entities, technology firms, non-profits, and a variety of clients with significant image, legal, community and public affairs concerns.
Mr. Butler serves as a director and key adviser to several major national business and philanthropic institutions and is past Chairman of the Board of the Council for Unity, a non-profit devoted to keeping school children out of gangs and getting them into college.
